PRELUDE AND FUGUE – ANDRE RISTIC

This is a live recording of Andre Ristic’s Prelude and Fugue, commissioned by the CBC in honour of Glenn Gould’s 75th Birthday. It’s a great piece for anyone to learn who is interested in contemporary music rooted in traditional forms. Also, seriously fun!

Below is a live recording at the Music Gallery I made for a Toca Loca concert.

FUGUE:

THE BATTLE OF MANASSAS – THOMAS WIGGINS

This was a part of the Continuum Press Play series. I continue to be astonished by this work. It was written by a 14-year old blind slave named Thomas Wiggins in 1861. He would go on to become the highest compensated pianist of the 19th century – or at least his owner was. I like to think of it as the sound of a brilliant mind both uninformed and unburdened by a formal music education.

SUNFLOWER SUTRA – JEROME KITZKE

One of the pieces I’ve always meant to record is Sunflower Sutra by Jerome Kitzke. It seems like it was heavily influenced by Frederic Rzewski’s De Profundis, but at this point in my life, I much prefer the former. Here’s a live version on youtube recorded by Steve Lilly at Newfound Festival in St. John’s, NL. There’s also a soundcloud of an earlier live version recorded by Paul Hodge at the Music Gallery. Which one do you prefer?

HALO BALLET – AARON GERVAIS & JULIA APLIN

One of my all time favourite projects. I had been playing a lot of Halo and also watched the Red vs Blue series. I was curious to see if modern dance can translate into a hyper-realistic (at the time) virtual environment. This project combines music by Aaron Gervais and choreography by Julia Aplin. It involves four LAN networked “Halorinas” playing in the Blood Gultch map. Three of the operators are dancing and the other serves as the camera.
